Daily Marketing News, October 7, 2026: TikTok brings 1-click checkout to the feed and opens its ad network

TikTok and OpenAI are both pulling the purchase inside their own apps. TikTok showed 1-click checkout from the feed and opened its network of 400,000 apps to US advertisers, and ChatGPT is about to test image ads. Meanwhile Google is finishing the third wave of its spam update.
Story of the day: TikTok brings checkout into the feed and opens its ad network to US advertisers
On October 6, 2026, major outlets broke down the package of ad products TikTok showed on October 5 at Advertising Week New York, the annual advertising conference in New York. There's a lot in it, so I'll go piece by piece.
The first group is about buying without leaving the app. Buy Direct is a 1-click purchase right from the For You feed. Shopping Assistant is a chat helper that guides people through shopping. Agentic Leads is an AI agent that collects leads both in TikTok direct messages and in forms on advertisers' own sites.
The second group is about reach and measurement. Pangle, TikTok's ad network, is now called TikTok Ad Network. It covers almost 400,000 third-party apps around the world, and US advertisers can now buy placements there directly in TikTok Ads Manager. GMV Max, the automated campaigns for TikTok Shop stores, will start counting affiliate commissions, coupons and referral fees, so sellers can see their real return on spend instead of a flattering one.
Now the honest part. The assistant, Buy Direct and the lead agent are available only in tests and only to eligible accounts. The ad network is open to everyone who advertises in the US. TikTok hasn't named launch dates for the rest.
Why this matters. Every step between "I like this" and "I paid" loses buyers, and TikTok is cutting those steps down to 1 click. The same thing is happening at OpenAI, more on that below. But in-app checkout only works as well as the data behind it. If you sell through TikTok, get your product catalog and shipping data in order now, before the tests reach your account.
More news, October 7, 2026
ChatGPT Ads is OpenAI's ad system inside the chatbot, and until now its ads appeared below answers. Now image ads are coming: they will show ideas, how a product is used, or experiences tied to products and services. Ads are labeled and kept separate from the image the user generates. The test starts in October with a first group of US advertisers. Measurement got wider too: Pixel and Conversions API track purchases, leads, installs and sign-ups, and Hightouch, Tealium and LiveRamp let you send conversions from your own systems. OpenAI puts ChatGPT's weekly audience at 1.2 billion people. The first cases look like this: according to DV Rockerbox, WeightWatchers paid 15.3% less per acquisition in ChatGPT Ads than its average in paid search, and according to Triple Whale, 93% of Portland Leather visitors from ChatGPT Ads were new.
A spam update is a change to Google's search systems that demotes sites using banned tactics: bought links, automated text written for rankings, hidden content. The update started in September, and the second wave ran on September 30. Barry Schwartz, editor of Search Engine Roundtable, believes the last phase ran from October 4 to 6 and that the update is about to finish, though another spike in ranking volatility is possible. If your Google traffic rose or fell sharply between October 4 and 6, the update may be the cause, not your edits. It's too early to roll back changes or rewrite pages on days like these: wait until Google announces the update is complete, then compare the week before with the week after.
Search Console is Google's free dashboard for site owners: it shows impressions, clicks and the queries people use to find a site in search. Before, the filter allowed only 1 country at a time. To see, say, the US, Canada and the UK together, you had to export 3 reports and add them up in a spreadsheet. Now you tick the countries in one filter, and Search Console shows their combined traffic from Google. According to Search Engine Land, the update also covers the device filter. The feature is free, like the rest of the dashboard. Site owners who work across several markets should rebuild their saved reports by country group.
Preferred sources is a Google feature: a user marks sites whose stories they want to see more often in the top news block in search. Until now there was nowhere to find out how many people had picked your site. Now Search Console sends an email with the number of such users per domain and shows a "Preferred source selections" line. There's no separate report in the dashboard for this number yet, it arrives by email. For publishers, news sites and blogs that ask readers to add them as a preferred source, this is the first way to measure whether those calls work. Check the inbox linked to your Search Console and write the number down as a baseline.
Search profiles are a page for a creator or publisher right in Google Search, something like a home base that gathers all their work. Before, the feature worked only in some countries. Google's VP of Search Robby Stein wrote that from October 6, creators and publishers in India and Canada can set up their page on Google, with Brazil coming soon. Other countries haven't been mentioned yet, and there's no fee for a profile. A search profile becomes a separate platform for a creator, next to social media and a website. If you write or film for an audience in India, Canada or Brazil, claim your page as soon as your country opens.
A call asset is an add-on to a Google search ad with a button that lets people call the business directly, usually from a phone. Normally Google shows only the number in this add-on. In the test, the advertiser's name appears next to the number in ad results. Google hasn't shared the scope or timing of the test. On mobile, a name next to the number helps people understand who exactly they're calling, and it may add trust and calls. Advertisers who get leads by phone should open their Google Ads account settings and check that the business name is the one customers actually know, with no extra words or old branding.
What creators, sellers, advertisers and site owners should do
- If your Google traffic changed sharply between October 4 and 6, leave the site alone until Google announces the spam update is complete. Then compare the week before with the week after.
- If your site serves several countries, rebuild your Search Console reports with the new country group filter. Check the site owner's inbox: there may be an email with the number of people who chose your site as a preferred source.
- Creators and publishers with an audience in India or Canada: set up your search profile now. If your audience is in Brazil, be ready to do it as soon as it opens.
- If you advertise on TikTok or ChatGPT in the US market, clean up your product feeds and conversion tracking before the tests start. 1-click checkout and image ads work exactly as well as the data you feed them.
- If phone calls bring you leads, check the business name in your Google Ads account now, before the test with names next to numbers reaches you.
