Daily Marketing News, 12 September 2026: Google tests a promo countdown

The day turned out almost entirely Google flavored: on 11 September 2026 Google confirmed an experiment with a promo countdown right inside a shopping ad, and on top of that opened product video uploads in Merchant Center. Instagram, TikTok and the rest of the networks produced nothing fresh in the 11 and 12 September window, everything I found is dated 10 September or earlier. So today is short and dense.

Story of the day

On 11 September 2026 Google confirmed it is testing a new label in shopping ads: next to the product it shows how many days are left before the promotion ends. In the screenshot posted by Sachin Patel it literally reads "5 days left". A Google spokesperson told Search Engine Roundtable this is a very early experiment.

After that comes the usual void: no list of countries, no share of impressions, no opt in conditions. There is no "turn on" button in the interface, and nobody is promising the test survives to a general launch. Half of these experiments die without ever reaching anyone except a screenshot in somebody else's tweet.

The interesting part is where the label gets its number. By all appearances it relies on the promotion end annotations that already exist in Merchant Center and the related attributes. So nothing new needs uploading, Google simply pulls out of the feed whatever you once put in there. Or did not put in. Or put in back in February and never touched again.

For anyone promoting products, the meaning is simple. The discount period stops being a technical field and becomes a visible element of the ad that works as an urgency counter. It works both ways: if the sale ended last week but the feed says end of month, the counter will happily paint nonexistent days for the shopper. No discount on the landing page, but a countdown in the ad, and trust evaporates.

What to do now: walk the feed and verify start and end dates on live promo products, not on the whole catalog at once. Set a rule that the end date in the feed changes at the same moment as the price, not three days later. And check how your promotion annotations are filled in at all, because ahead of the sale season this is the cheapest work available.

Briefly

01On 11 September 2026 a "Product videos" section appeared in Google Merchant Center.

A product video now uploads straight into the interface, through a dedicated screen: previously it came mostly through the feed and third party sources. On the upload page Google explains it by saying video gives the shopper a more engaging and illustrative experience. The announcement names no limits on length, file size or formats, and no full rollout date either, Search Engine Roundtable reports. For a store this is one more content slot that feeds both the Google Shopping listing and shopping ads. Which means the product clip now gets prepared the same way as the main photo: it goes into the shoot plan in advance instead of being filmed on a phone the night before the sale.

02On 11 September 2026 Search Engine Roundtable reported that Google Ads is testing a new "Video Campaign Group" object.

The option shows up in the campaign creation flow, is available for video campaigns and Demand Gen, and gives aggregated metrics plus reach and frequency management across several campaigns inside the group at once. It is a beta, and Google has not disclosed the access process or the country list. The core change: frequency capping stops being counted inside a single campaign and moves up to the group level, and reporting rolls up across the whole group too. If you run video and Demand Gen, look in your account to see whether the option appeared, and when you launch seasonal flights compare frequency in a group against your usual setup of separate campaigns.

03On 11 September 2026 report segmentation by loyalty program members appeared in Google Ads.

The "Loyalty program members" segment itself was added a month earlier as a retention option, and now you can slice reporting by that attribute and look at results for loyal customers separately. Google has not published requirements for the size of the uploaded list or the set of campaign types where the segment is available. The practical point is that spend and conversions from existing customers get separated from new customer acquisition, and cost per new customer stops being an account wide average smeared across repeat sales. One condition: the loyalty program member list has to be uploaded into the account.

04On 11 September 2026 Google AdSense announced two settings in the "Privacy & messaging" section.

They are called "Maximize message coverage" and "Optimize my consent message": the first widens the coverage of the consent message, the second automatically picks the variant of that message. The rollout covers the European Economic Area, the UK and Switzerland, that is, the places where showing a consent message is legally required. Google gave no figures on consent uplift in the announcement, and no promises either. For a site owner monetizing through AdSense this is directly about money: the more users see a correct message and give consent, the more personalized impressions stay in European traffic. Better to check the settings now, before the high bid season in the fourth quarter.

05On 11 September 2026 data for June 2026 disappeared from the page indexing report in Google Search Console.

Barry Schwartz writes that the report has been behaving oddly for several months already, and that complaints about indexing spiked in September. At the same time he allows that this is a display bug rather than actual loss of pages from the index, and reminds readers that Google has already confirmed a temporary bug in Search Console reporting. The SEO takeaway is unpleasant but clear: comparing indexing trends against June right now is not possible, and any "drop" in the report needs verification against server logs and the actual presence of pages in search. And keep your own fresh indexing exports, because the history in the interface is evidently not a permanent thing.

06On 11 September 2026 Search Engine Land reported the launch of customizable dashboards in Google Analytics.

Per the release description, Dashboards bring key metrics into a single report, support drag and drop blocks and new visualization types, so instead of a pile of scattered reports you get one screen. The same update announces custom attribution windows in whole days, both for click conversions and for engaged view conversions. I could not open the full article, so the country list and the enablement process are unconfirmed. For anyone assembling a monthly report for a client or a manager, this is a chance to stop exporting everything by hand into a spreadsheet and keep one configured screen per person.

07On 11 September 2026 Search Engine Land wrote that advertisers are complaining about promotional credits being revoked in Google Ads.

Per the complaints the pattern goes like this: the bonus is pulled after the advertiser already spent their own budget to meet the promotion conditions. The available part of the material has no number of affected accounts, no amounts and no official Google position, and I could not open the full text. The practical conclusion does not change: any promo code or top up bonus in an ad platform is an optional gift, not a line in a media plan. Model the campaign economics so they work without the bonus, save the promotion terms as a screenshot together with the credit date, and only spend toward the threshold where you were going to run the campaign anyway.

08On 11 September 2026 Search Engine Land reported that TikTok rejected Meta ads calling on rivals to join a child safety settlement.

I could not open the source, only the headline is known: no wording of the rejection, no number of ads, no timeline in the available part, so I have no details for you either. But the fact itself is useful even without them. A platform can reject a campaign that mentions a competing platform's position or an industry dispute, and moderation in such cases stretches to unpredictable timelines. If your creative names another platform directly, budget extra time for review and keep a backup version without names ready.

09On 11 September 2026 Search Engine Roundtable spotted a layout bug in Google search: the "Sponsored" heading above the ad block sometimes shifts and is not aligned to the left edge.

Barry Schwartz considers it a formatting bug rather than a deliberate change, there is no official Google comment, the scale is undisclosed, and it does not reproduce for everyone. It has zero effect on bids, impressions or any other numbers. It matters for exactly one group of people: those who take screenshots of the results page for reports and competitor tracking. Before building a theory that Google redesigned the ad block, check on another device, because some of the discrepancies right now come down to an ordinary bug on Google's side.

What to do about it

  1. Get the feed in order before the sale season: verify promotion start and end dates and prepare product videos. Both the countdown label and the new Merchant Center section pull data from exactly there.
  2. Do not build a media plan around bonuses and promotional credits: model campaign economics without them, save promotion terms as screenshots, and do not burn budget just to clear a threshold.
  3. Stop drawing conclusions about indexing drops from the Search Console report in its current state: cross check against server logs and actual presence of pages in search, and store your own exports separately.
  4. Check three new controls in your accounts: the loyalty program member segment in Google Ads reports, the video campaign group beta with shared frequency, and dashboards in Google Analytics for the client report.

If you want, I will look at your feed and count where your promo dates diverge from reality, write to support.

mrpopular has been running since 2014, and promotion has been in front of my eyes all that time: social networks, search engines, ads, suppliers, orders, disputes, statistics.

One company holds every side of the market: a promotion service where most services are our own rather than resold; the etask marketplace, where tasks are done by real people; a support desk that shows what customers actually complain about. So the texts contain what agency reports leave out: supplier prices, drop-off rates, chat logs, statistics screenshots.

A marketing blog without fairy tales. What works, what stopped working, what it costs and why.

My topics: social networks and paid boosts, ads, traffic, suppliers and the market from the inside, plus the marketing news issue every morning.
