Daily Marketing News, September 22, 2026: ads in Threads without an Instagram account

Meta has unhooked Threads ads from Instagram: companies with no Instagram profile can now run campaigns straight from their Threads account. Pinterest started showing advertisers a campaign setup score, X expanded its Under The Hood report to reveal restrictions imposed at the request of local authorities, and Metricool reported that spend on Meta campaigns is up 47% while returns fall.

Story of the day: Meta allows Threads ads without an Instagram account

On 21 September 2026 Social Media Today reported that Meta has removed the link between Threads advertising and an Instagram account. Threads is Meta's text based social network, launched in 2023 as an app bolted onto an Instagram profile; ads in it are sold through the same Meta ad account as Facebook and Instagram.

How it used to work: to run ads in Threads a business needed an Instagram profile and the same username in both apps. How it works now: the usernames no longer have to match, and companies with no Instagram profile at all can advertise straight from their Threads account. In Meta's own wording, the change applies starting from September 2026, the rollout is gradual, and access is not open to every advertiser yet.

Threads claims 500 million users. At that size, keeping a mirror Instagram account purely so the ad manager would let you into Threads was a pure formality: you had to occupy the username in both apps even if you never published anything on Instagram.

For anyone doing promotion this gives two things. First: you can build a separate plan and separate content for Threads instead of copying Instagram posts over just to keep profiles aligned. Second: the audiences of the two apps no longer have to be mixed under one username, and the results show what text posts actually brought in.

What to do now: open your Meta ad account and check whether launching in Threads is available to you, since the rollout is not reaching everyone at once. If you have access and no Instagram profile, you can build a campaign from scratch off your Threads profile. If you do have an Instagram profile but the usernames differ between the two apps, there is nothing to rename.

01On 21 September 2026 Pinterest started showing advertisers a campaign setup score.

Pinterest is a visual bookmarking service where people collect shopping and home renovation ideas, and ads are bought in Ads Manager. Advertisers used to guess whether they had fed the automation enough data; now Ads Manager has a campaign optimization score, a single measure of how closely your setup matches practices the platform has tested, and according to Pinterest the higher the score, the better the campaign performs. It is calculated from 4 elements: whether Performance+ automated campaigns are switched on (a set of AI driven campaigns where the system picks the audience, the bids and the budget split itself), whether you have creative variants, whether targeting is broad rather than narrow, whether the budget is spent evenly. The platform's recommendations are specific: at least 3 ad formats per ad group, 5 or more different ads, an up to date product feed and catalogue, conversion data sent back. In March 2026 Pinterest said Performance+ campaigns improved cost per click and cost per action by 10% against regular ones. If you sell there, bring the group up to 3 formats and 5 ads and see how the score moves.

02On 21 September 2026 X expanded its Under The Hood report: it now shows restrictions imposed at the request of authorities.

Under The Hood is a stats section in X (formerly Twitter) that the platform launched in August 2026 alongside the publication of part of its source code: in simplified form it shows an account owner which labels and restrictions were applied to their posts and profile over the past month. Previously only the platform's own labels were visible. Now the report also shows whether the visibility of the account or of individual posts was limited to comply with local law: for example, whether a post was hidden in a specific country at the request of the authorities, and in which one. Access goes to accounts older than 1 year that published more than 10 posts in the previous month. For creators this is the first proper way to check a shadow ban suspicion and explain a collapse in reach without guesswork, especially for those earning through X's monetisation programme. Open the report for last month before you rewrite your content plan.

03On 21 September 2026 Snapchat gave paying Lens+ subscribers a set of AI features.

Snapchat is a messenger built on disappearing photos and videos, and Lens+ is its paid subscription for augmented reality and AI tools, separate from the basic Snapchat+. Five things were added: Snap to song turns a chosen message from a chat into a track in a chosen genre; AI Photoshoot fixes bad photos where the person blinked, looked away or the light was poor; AI Remix rebuilds an image into a new scene; AI fonts give bubble letters, a fluffy texture and something like spray paint; and stickers get rebuilt in new styles. Snapchat took the idea of songs from chats out of the short video trend. An important detail for anyone hoping to churn out reach with these tools: in August 2026 Snapchat tightened its Spotlight feed rules and cut the reach of fully generated videos. In other words, the new features are entertainment for paying users and material for private chats, not a free traffic channel.

04On 21 September 2026 Snapchat+ subscribers got three-dimensional houses on Snap Map.

Snapchat+ is the app's basic paid subscription, and Snap Map is the built in map that shows where friends are and what is happening nearby. Until now the map only showed pins and avatars; now a subscriber can build a three-dimensional model of their own house, choose a spot for it and set how the building looks. The feature shipped in the same update as the AI features for Lens+ and serves the same platform goal: make the paid subscriptions more visible and keep the people who already pay. Anyone promoting local spots, cafés, salons or corner shops should keep the Snapchat map in view: the more users fiddle with the map, the more it becomes a shop window next to a person rather than a utility screen.

05On 21 September 2026 the XChat messenger disappeared from the app stores.

XChat is a standalone app from X that was meant to move private messaging out of the main app into a separate encrypted product. According to Social Media Today, citing 9to5Mac, the app was quietly pulled from both Apple's App Store and Google Play, with no official explanation from the company. Direct messages meanwhile stay inside the main X app and work as before. For anyone talking to followers in direct messages the conclusion is simple: there is nothing to build on if you were planning broadcasts or customer support in XChat as a separate channel, all of it stays in the main app.

06On 21 September 2026 Social Media Today's roundup included the Metricool report on social advertising for 2026: spend on Meta campaigns is up 47% while returns fall.

Metricool is a publishing and social analytics service for agencies and brands, and it builds its reports on anonymised data from the accounts and ad accounts connected to it. This is about Facebook and Instagram campaigns, that is, the most common way to buy social traffic. For an advertiser the number means one thing: buying inside Meta is getting more expensive faster than results are growing, and the holiday season budget needs headroom. The practical step: measure payback on your own side, from CRM revenue or shop statistics, not from the conversion numbers in the ad account, and decide in advance what cost per lead you are willing to accept.

07On 21 September 2026 ppc.world reported that OpenAI has built ChatGPT into Microsoft Word.

Word is Microsoft's text editor and ChatGPT is OpenAI's chatbot, which until now worked in its own app, in a browser and through the API, while inside Word only Microsoft's own assistant did anything similar. According to ppc.world the feature is available worldwide and on every ChatGPT plan, including the free one. For anyone who writes a lot of working text this saves window switching: briefs, product descriptions, emails and posts can be drafted right in the document where the text will be edited anyway. The same caution as always applies: numbers, prices, dates and names in such drafts have to be checked by hand, because the model invents them confidently and convincingly.

What to do about this if you are a creator, an advertiser or a shop owner

  1. Creators and brands with no Instagram: open your Meta ad account and check whether launching Threads ads is available to you. Access is rolling out gradually, and if you have it, the mirror Instagram profile is no longer needed.
  2. Pinterest advertisers: put at least 3 ad formats and 5 or more different creatives in the group, check the feed and catalogue, switch conversion data on, and only then look at the campaign setup score.
  3. Creators on X: open Under The Hood for last month and match your reach drops against what the report shows, including restrictions imposed at the request of authorities in individual countries. Access conditions: an account older than 1 year and more than 10 posts in the month.
  4. Anyone planning a holiday budget on Facebook and Instagram: build in higher buying prices, using the 47% rise in spend from the Metricool report as a reference point, and keep payback records on your own side, not in the ad account.
  5. Anyone drafting text in Word with ChatGPT: check every number, price and name by hand before the text goes to a client or into an ad.
