TikTok turned comments into a separate channel

TikTok turned comments into a separate channel

On September 3, 2026 TikTok announced that you can now leave voice notes up to 60 seconds under a video, polls with five options, carousels of up to nine photos and live photos. The rollout runs across iOS and Android over the next month, voice notes only for accounts 18 and up. The platform gets more than 1.7 billion comments a day, and that whole mass is now being rebuilt into something close to a messenger. Below: what actually changed in the mechanics, how I would use it under my own videos and where the trouble starts.

What exactly got switched on

Four things, and they mean different things.

Voice comment: a microphone icon in the input field, recording up to 60 seconds. Poll: the creator attaches a vote to their own video, up to five options, results visible in real time. Carousel: up to nine photos in a single comment. Live photos: the ones from your gallery that capture a slice of movement and sound before and after the shutter.

Notice the asymmetry. Voice notes, carousels and live photos are available to anyone commenting. The poll is placed by the creator. So three tools went to the viewer, one to you. That matters more than it looks: the platform did not hand you a new button, it handed it to the crowd under your video.

Why this is not cosmetics

The TechCrunch breakdown puts it plainly: TikTok is dragging messenger formats into comments so people linger there and talk to each other instead of dropping a reaction and leaving. It ships in one batch with travel booking inside the app and a location based local feed. The app stops being a feed of clips and becomes a place where people live.

What that means for the numbers. Time under a video used to be measured in seconds: read the top comment, leave. A 40 second voice note is 40 seconds a person spends on your page. A carousel of nine photos is nine swipes. All of that time formally belongs to your video. Nobody has shown yet how exactly the algorithm counts it [number needed], but it would be silly to assume it does not count it at all.

Second layer: TikTok increasingly works like a search engine, where topic match matters more than follower count. Dataconomy writes about this, referencing the same update. A voice comment gets transcribed into text, and the text becomes a signal about the topic. If forty people are discussing frame size out loud under a video about picking a bicycle, the video gains a semantic tail it never had before.

What to do with the poll while it is still empty

The poll is the only one of the four features the creator controls, and the only one that gives you data without dragging your audience off to a third party form.

How I would set it up:

  1. Do not ask "did you like the video". That is garbage that gives nothing to you or to the algorithm.
  2. Ask about the next video. "What should I film next" with five options. You get votes, a ready made content plan and a reason to come back to the comments with the result.
  3. Ask something that turns into a number you can sell with. "How much do you pay for this right now" with brackets. In a week you have your own price statistics, and that becomes a separate video.
  4. Come back to the thread. Results are visible in real time, so a day later you can pin a comment like "62% picked the second option, filming that". The thread comes alive a second time.

The first two weeks of any new feature are cheap attention. That is how it went with photo carousels in the feed, that is how it went with stories in every network in a row. People tap an unfamiliar button just because it is new. In a month they get used to it and stop.

  3. After thatthe format stops being new, taps happen out of habit

Voice under your video

A voice comment is someone else's tone of voice on your territory. Tone cannot be skimmed. Sarcasm that reads as a neutral sentence in text lands like a punch when spoken.

The obvious upside: live feedback. In 60 seconds a person will tell you what they would never type out with their thumbs. For anyone selling a service that is a free customer interview. I would ask for it right in the video: "record a voice note about what did not work for you". That question used to bring three lines of text, now it can bring a minute of specifics.

The downside is obvious too. Voice cannot be scanned fast. Two hundred text comments I scroll in five minutes and I see where the fight started. Two hundred voice notes of 60 seconds each is more than three hours of audio. Nobody is going to listen to that, which means something you never hear will take root under a popular video.

now200 voice notes of a minute each, more than 3 hours of audio

Where the chaos starts

A carousel of nine photos in a comment under a video with a million views is visual noise that drowns everything else. Coverage of the update flags the same risk: threads on popular posts can turn into mush, and audio is harder to scan for violations than text.

The practical takeaway is simple. Moderating under a video stopped being a five minute task and became work. If you run an account where the comments are treated as a shop window, you will have to:

And separately about fake engagement. The grey services market picks up any new interaction type within a month or two. A voice comment costs more to fake than a text one: you need audio, you need different voices, you need 18+ accounts. So for a while voice comments will look more honest than the rest, and that alone is a trust signal for the viewer. How long it holds, I do not know. My bet is not long.

What I am testing on my own videos

First thing you must not do: rebuild everything around the new buttons because there was a news item. A feature does not make a bad video good.

What is worth testing on the next five to ten videos:

You measure it in a plain spreadsheet: date, video, poll yes or no, views, comments, of those voice ones, profile visits. Three weeks later you can see whether it works or you imagined it. I have no clean data myself yet, the platform is only rolling the feature out, and I am not going to invent growth percentages for you.

What to do right now

There is no new growth mechanic here. There is a month during which a button people are not used to yet shows up under your videos, and you can catch that curiosity first in your niche. After that everything goes back to normal: you just have to film better.

If you want, I will look at your case by the numbers, write to support.
